The Tuskegee Airmen Memorial at Sewickley Cemetery is the largest outdoor memorial of its kind in the United States. It was dedicated on September 15, 2013 and commemorates the legacy of almost 100 Tuskegee Airmen who hailed from Western Pennsylvania – eight from Sewickley.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces. This elite corps of pilots and support personnel overcame racial prejudice and discrimination to help defeat the Nazis. One airman, Second Lieutenant Mitchell L. Higginbotham 1921-2016, is interred just adjacent to the memorial.

The memorial is located on land donated by Sewickley Cemetery. The plaza has four large monuments, including two engraved with the names of the Western Pennsylvania Airmen. Atop the memorial’s central tower sits an airplane tail sculpted from a block of red granite, a nod to the “Red Tails,” the unit’s nickname.

We welcome you to visit the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial but please note that the cemetery’s roads are narrow and cannot accommodate large school buses; minibuses and minivans are preferred. As always, please remember that this is an active cemetery. Please be respectful of the privacy and comfort of our families and friends who are visiting other sites on the grounds.
